Why I Love Journaling (And You Should Too!)

MarvaeHabitsLeave a Comment

I’ve observed something leaders have in common: they are perpetually busy! While I’ve banned that word from my own vocabulary, it’s a word that leaders (not to mention everyone else) uses more frequently than they realize! Most often, the word busy is used in connection with something they know they ought to be doing, but just don’t have the time. There are a few tasks that seem to fall into that category, tasks that would make a remarkable difference and give them some time back! One of those tasks: journaling! Some people find putting pen to paper thrilling. For others, … Read More

Why Fun Never Fails

Not long ago I turned 40, again! It was a magnificent day. My day began with sleeping until I woke up, something I don’t normally do on a work day. It felt fantastic! I lingered at breakfast and ate just what I wanted, not what I had time for. The days preceding my birthday were nippy and gray; even a snow flurry or two! But on my birthday, the weather was amazing. There was a gentle breeze and tons of sunshine. I took advantage of the beautiful day and worked in my yard. Yard work might not be your kind … Read More

How to Bring Out the Best in Your People

It’s spring, so that means happy times in my yard. The weather’s been absolutely perfect for gardening! Watching the flowers in my yard bloom – that brings me joy! Even a trip to the mail box is an adventure because it’s a chance to see what new flowers have arrived on the scene. Flanking our front door, we have some lovely flower boxes. I love the idea of people being welcomed by a colorful profusion of blooms as they come to the door. My flower boxes don’t have the benefit of sprinklers like the rest of my yard. That means … Read More

How Many Hats Do You Wear?

MarvaeLeadership8 Comments

Hats look awesome on most people – I am just not so fond of how hats look on me. I am not quite sure why I chose to wear a hat when I got married, but that was a number of years ago! These days, I only wear hats out of necessity. I have a cute baseball cap with pearls on it that I wear to keep my hair from becoming a tangled mess when we are out on the lake having fun on the boat. I also have a knit hat or two with matching scarves  that I wear … Read More

It Takes Commitment!

Ordinarily my husband and I go away for our anniversary. Over the years, we’ve celebrated our marriage in a variety of ways. When we were young and still paying off student loans, we went camping and enjoyed mud baths. Another year we stayed in a beautiful bed and breakfast that overlooked Monterey Bay. More often than not, our anniversary celebration has included warm weather and water even though we got married in March. We’ve been to Puerto Rico, Cabo San Lucas, Key West, and the Bahamas. This year, due to work commitments, my husband and I chose to stick closer … Read More

Productivity Begins in Your Mind

Your mind – it’s powerful! It can work for you or against you! You get to choose! The way you think about time and what’s on your “to do“ list determines your level of productivity. Ultimately, the goal is to get more done in less time, freeing up space for those things that you keep putting off like self-care, connecting with those you love, or perhaps getting around to that  something you’ve been putting off for way too long. Productivity is not being busy. It’s about utilizing your time wisely so that you can accomplish more with less effort. That’s … Read More

Is It Time for a New Groove?

MarvaeProductivityLeave a Comment

When buying a house the three most important factors are location, location, and location. And when it comes to music, the most important thing is rhythm, rhythm, and rhythm. Without that foundational timing and groove, music suffers. My four years of piano lessons highlighted for me that musical talent was not my strength. For me, a piano recital invoked great anxiety! What if I hit a bad note? This fear was so real that I conveniently missed my last recital because I never told my parents the date. This is not something I recommend, by the way. The end of … Read More

7 Keys to Unleashing the Power of Priorities

Rolling out of bed at my leisure and spending the rest of the day following my nose – playing a game of four-square or hopscotch, running in the sprinklers, riding my bike, exploring, and hanging with my friends. Whatever grabbed my attention determined how I spent my day. Being in the moment, fully present – that’s what I loved about summer growing up! I look back on those carefree days with fondness. Back then, engaging in activities that made a difference or were fulfilling were not even on my radar. All these many years later, the longing to make a … Read More

The Power of Patience

MarvaeSuccess2 Comments

The bulk of our TV viewing is watching shows we’ve recorded, so the glitch we’ve been experiencing with our cable TV the last month or so has turned what used to be a relaxing way to spend an evening into something quite maddening. Part of the benefit of recorded TV is being able to fast forward through the commercials. That’s simply not an option for us right now. Any attempt to skip commercials zaps you right back to the beginning of the show. And even though my husband and I know all about this funky glitch, there are still times … Read More

You Think You’re Loving Your Team, But You’re NOT!

Great leaders do two things: 1) They lead themselves well, modeling what they wish others would do. 2) They inspire others to achieve more than they ever imagined possible. Everyone has the opportunity to lead because leadership is much more than a title! If you’ve ever worked with children, you know that many of them can take over a class or persuade other children to follow their lead. Sometimes they even gain more followers than the adult in charge! That just goes to show you that leadership has nothing to do with a title. While there are some terrible leaders … Read More
